Aubrey's mission Project

One of the best parts of being a 4th grader is getting to do the mission project!! I remember taking my kindergartner to school seeing those "big kids" caring their missions into the school so proud of what they built.  Well now my daughter is one of those big kids and we had an absolute blast making her mission! The kids got to choose what mission they wanted to do and since we have so much history in our family surrounding San Fransisco I thought it would be fun for her to do the Mission Dolores.  I am 7th generation San Fransisco-an which means the kids are 8th generation.  That is a pretty big deal when you think most people are 1st or 2nd Californian! My family has been here a long time! Sure enough we did have a cousin that was a priest at Mission Dolores.  I also thought it would be cool for her to do this mission since it's pretty much in our backyard since we go back to the bay area a lot to see family.  Sure enough we got to do a day trip and it was so fun to get to see the mission in real life after doing do much research.  Fun fact.... Mission Dolores is the oldest building in San Fransisco.  It is built from adobe bricks which is not very sturdy but it with stood the big 1902 earthquake even though the church next door fell down.
Look at my proud girl....
In order to not fail the project you could not use a kit so everything we did was from scratch! We had a blast! It took a good 2 weeks to do everything but it was so much fun.
First we made the wall out of cardboard...
Then we put clay on it and waited for it to dry and then painted over the clay.  This gave it the adobe look.
Then it was time to start working on the details like the front balcony and stairs.
 Aubrey loved making the cemetery.
then we made the roof out of lasagna noodles.
then we added all the details like the bells, cross, trees and priest.
It came out amazing!

This project was so much fun for Aubrey and I do together! We mostly used stuff we had around the house so I think the whole project was under $20!
On March 24th we took a family day trip to San Fransisco to see the mission in real life.

What the land looked like before the mission...

 What a great day!!
